GFC at COP30

Global Fund for Children highlights the voices and leadership of Brazilian youth climate activists at COP30, challenging traditional funding structures and ensuring youth have a seat at the table.

As Brazil hosts COP30, Global Fund for Children (GFC) highlights a critical contradiction: young people from Indigenous, quilombola, and peripheral communities are leading innovative climate solutions every day — yet colonial funding structures continue to exclude them from the resources and decision-making spaces they need to scale their work. High travel costs, bureaucratic hurdles, and systemic barriers often prevent the very youth most affected by climate change from participating in summits meant to address it.

The impact on youth is real. According to the national research – JUMA 2023 – 8 in 10 young Brazilians report that the climate crisis is already affecting their lives through mental health deterioration, food insecurity, and feelings of hopelessness. Despite organizing for climate justice, they face significant barriers to accessing support.

Youth activism in Brazil is not waiting for permission. The question for philanthropy is: will you meet them where they already are?

Weaving Climate Solutions: Youth-Led Insights

Funded by GFC, Weaving Climate Solutions: Brazilian Youth Insights on the Role of Philanthropy in the Fight for Justice is the first participatory mapping study of its kind. Co-created with 43 youth collectives and organizations across Brazil, it presents both a critique and 21 actionable recommendations for how philanthropy can better support young climate leaders. Key recommendations include:

  • Simplify reporting requirements for youth-led projects
  • Ensure fair payment for activists’ time
  • Invest in mental health support and activist security
  • Expand access to decision-making spaces such as COP30
