By supporting 10 diverse grassroots organizations based in Yucatan, Mexico, GFC promotes the rights, agency, advocacy skills and access to opportunities and services for Mayan girls and adolescents.

The main goal of the U muuk’il xch ́úupalo ́ob/ Iniciativa La Fuerza de las Niñas / Strength of Girls Initiative is to support Mayan girls and adolescents to exercise their voice and rights surrounded by communities and contexts that listen to them, accompany them and offer significant opportunities to enhance their leadership, overcome multiple structural, socio-cultural and gender barriers and assert their right to education.

The core principles of the initiative are: intersectionality, feminist advocacy and youth leadership, culturally appropriate education, community- driven systems change and gender-transformative approach. A gender-transformative approach to education improves access to education, enhances the quality of education by fostering the agency of all participants, and challenges power relations and gender norms by engaging multiple actors to influence systems. Recognizing the multiple dimensions of oppression, we frame education as a liberating process that transcends schools and holds the potential to challenge violent structures and create new narratives, practices, norms, and policies that reinforce cultural identities and promote gender justice for all.

GFC deeply believes in power-shifting, participatory, and collective decision-making processes. In keeping with this commitment, we created a partner selection committee for the initiative that included civil society leaders, youth leaders, and activists from Indigenous communities in the region that participated directly in the partner selection process.
